NAPLES, FLORIDA, UNITED STATES, February 27, 2019 / — Research grant funds made available by Alzheimer’s Germ Quest, Inc. (AGQ), have been awarded to two researchers, one at Harvard and the other at University of North Carolina, to investigate roles of microbes in Alzheimer’s disease, announces Leslie Norins, MD, PhD, company CEO.

The recipients were Colette Cywes-Bentley, PhD, assistant professor of medicine, Harvard Medical School, Boston, and Allison Aiello, PhD, professor of epidemiology in North Carolina’s School of Global Public Health, Chapel Hill.

The awards were the result of collaboration between AGQ and the Foundation of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), which designed and administered the application and judging process.

Dr. Norins says the stimulus for the awards was “the willingness of IDSA, the country’s premier organization of infectious disease specialists, to encourage investigation of infectious agents as possible triggers or promoters of Alzheimer’s disease”. He says the interest of IDSA is a major milestone in widening the search for causation of Alzheimer’s beyond the decades-long focus on two characteristic proteins found in the brains of patients, amyloid plaques and tau tangles.

Dr. Cywes-Bentley will investigate whether a particular chemical marker, known to scientists as PNAG, and common to many pathogenic bacteria, can help identify the participation of these microbes in Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr. Aiello will study data from large groups of volunteers, who have been followed as they age, to see if various factors related to infection correlate with subsequent development of Alzheimer’s disease.

AGQ is a public benefit corporation headquartered in Naples, Florida. Its mission is to accelerate and deepen research into the role of microbes in the causation of Alzheimer’s disease. It is self-funded, and neither solicits nor accepts outside donations or grants.

“If you’re being mistreated, you can't let it go on, because if you don't nip it in the bud at the beginning, people will feel like they can continue to treat you that way,” says Karen. “In the '80s, men didn't really want women in the military in the first place, so I had to overcome that. I'm also very feminine type of girl, whereas a lot of the women in the military didn’t wear makeup or have nails. So I kind of broke the mold. I still wanted to be me even though I was in the military. I just didn't want to compromise that.”

How a person wants to be treated is entirely dependent on each individual’s needs. You determine it for yourself and demand it of others, even your boss.

“Each person is unique,” says Karen. “I just want people to understand that you can be successful and authentic. You have to be yourself.”

Karen says the key to shifting these work-environment paradigms is for all women to come together and support each other.

“Women need to help each other,” says Karen. “I believe we will all make more of a difference in any field if we take that approach.”

In Mobtown Massacre, Cutler shares the story of Alexander Hanson, a 19th century Federalist newspaper editor whose anti-war writings provoked a bloodthirsty mob, a midnight jailbreak and a brutal massacre in the city of Baltimore that stunned the nation. Hanson was later elected to the U.S. Congress, but never fully recovered from the brutal attack on his newspaper.

This fateful but little-known episode in American history helped shape the course of a war and the nation’s promise of a free press. And it all started with a headline.

Josh Cutler, a Duxbury resident, is an attorney, and former newspaper editor who currently serves as a State Representative. He represents a district which includes the Town of Hanson, MA, which is named after Alexander Hanson.

“Ari & Abigail's Passport to Israel was originally created to help guide young families through the Maltz Museum's special exhibit, Israel: Then & Now, as a reflection of the learning we do when we travel. We meet new people, see new places, try new foods, and discover connections between ourselves and others,” notes the author at the end of the book.

Audiences have been enjoying an interactive version of the new children’s book since the world premiere of the Israel: Then & Now special exhibit. The book has been turned into a Story Walk in which panels from the book plus hands-on activities pair to help make the exhibit accessible to children. Children are even invited to pick up toy binoculars for happy exploring and take them home to make every day an adventure.

Recently kindergarten and first grade students from Mandel Jewish Day School visited the exhibition to hear author and Museum staffer, Dahlia Fisher, read "Ari & Abigail’s Passport to Israel" as they walked through the gallery together. The students were so excited about their experience many came back with their parents the following week to explore further on their own.

'Ari & Abigail’s Passport to Israel' book launch event promises to be an equally great time for guests who can enjoy a book reading and signing, participate in crafts for kids, have a caricature artist draw their picture, and go on the interactive Story Walk, plus sample some Israeli-style snacks.
