Washington D.C. Mayor Launches Month-Long “innoMAYtion” Initiative

Mayor Bowser Launches Month-Long “innoMAYtion” Initiative

(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser kicked off Small Business Week by announcing innoMAYtion, a month-long initiative to showcase innovative programs that will create jobs, engage residents, and position the District as a hub of innovation. Highlighting public and private sector programs, innoMAYtion will concentrate on innovative ways the city responds to meet the needs of District communities.

“Throughout the month of May, my Administration will showcase how District residents and businesses are creating economic opportunity for residents by taking innovative approaches to complex problems,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser. “In Washington, we are tackling challenges head on and creating good-paying jobs that create pathways to the middle class for District residents.”

Events throughout the month will focus on key priorities for the Bowser Administration, including education, technology, small business, the creative economy, and good government.

To kick-off innoMAYtion, Mayor Bowser and Director of Department of Local and Small Business Development (DSLBD) Ana Harvey officially launched CompeteDC, an innovative capacity building and bonding support initiative that prepares small, emerging enterprises to take advantage of the District’s local procurement power. CompeteDC includes four program components to increase the competitiveness of District firms: bonding, teaming, mentorship, and capacity training. The initiative is a partnership with a number of community-based small business service providers.

Held at the offices of The Menkiti Group, a District-based small real estate company, Mayor Bowser and Surety Fidelity Association of America (SFAA) President Lynn Shubert signed a bonding support agreement. SFAA will provide Surety professionals who will serve as facilitators for a five-week bond readiness program that is available to any qualified District small business. The goal of this innovative, cooperative effort between DSLBD and SFAA is to grow the pool of bondable DC small businesses capable to compete for local contracting opportunities.

Bowser also welcomed the first class of participants in CompeteDC’s CEO Growth Academy an extensive six-month training program for executives of emerging real estate and construction firms. DSLBD is currently accepting applicants for the next class at the CEO Growth Academy.

“We are taking an innovative approach to providing vital resources to small construction and real estate companies in the District. CompeteDC will help further our mission to foster economic growth, development, and retention of DC-based businesses,” said DSLBD Director Harvey.

Later this week, as part of innoMAYtion, the Mayor will join 1776, a DC-based global technology incubator, to announce a pilot program that will provide high-potential, low-income high school graduates with training opportunities for jobs in the digital economy.

This week’s innoMAYtion events will culminate with a Hackathon and Policy Jam on Saturday, a full-day event hosted by the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED), the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), and Code for DC that will bring together civic hackers, transportation experts, urban planners, academics, entrepreneurs and community members to develop innovative solutions to DC’s transportation challenges.

Internet Product Development Group Launches News Plugin for WordPress

NewsPlugin lets WordPress users create free, customized breaking news feeds

NewsPlugin is a market transformational platform for sharing content within the WordPress environment.— David Rothstein, Director of Corporate DevelopmentWASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, UNITED STATES, April 14, 2015 /EINPresswire.com/ — NewsPlugin, a news plugin for WordPress from Internet Product Development Group (IPD Group), allows users to create custom newsfeeds for their websites at no cost. It is a quick, easy and customizable way to integrate relevant breaking news from thousands of sources.

News continues to become a main source of content for blogs and websites. According to a 2014 Pew Research Center report, “half of social network site users have shared news stories, images or videos” and 46 percent have used social media to discuss news. In fact, before major news breaks in traditional media outlets, social media users obtain their information from online sites, such as in the case of the riots in Ferguson, Missouri.

NewsPlugin helps bloggers and website owners take advantage of this rapidly changing online news landscape. It supplements their own content and works toward maximizing their readership. Ideal for niche audiences, it’s a customizable platform where they can easily choose and publish news sourced from more than 250 million articles, with 75,000 new ones added each day.

The IPD Group has been scanning and indexing news sources since 1995, and as of today, it sources news from about 5,000 news websites. The group’s leading real-time news index uses state-of-the-art technology. NewsPlugin’s aggregated news base is reviewed by an experienced editorial team to retain a personal touch.

“NewsPlugin is a market transformational platform for sharing content within the WordPress environment,” David Rothstein, IPD Group chief executive officer, said. “It’s a remarkably easy-to-use widget and plugin system to put live news from thousands of sources on your web pages.”

Unlike an RSS service that contains articles from a single source, NewsPlugin is completely customizable, with the user’s own keywords and settings. Aside from keywords, users can choose the number of articles, sort by date or relevance, show abstracts of each news item, and modify the feed’s appearance using widgets and shortcodes, among other features.

Rothstein added, “We’re working on some exciting upgrades in the pipeline, and we’re looking at unveiling these towards the end of the year. Suffice to say, these upgrades will transform content syndication for content publishers worldwide. NewsPlugin will empower online publishers to become syndicators of their own content, with top-of-the-line tools to manage it.”

Headquartered in Washington, D.C., IPD Group specializes in creating industry-specific content packages and highly targeted custom news packages.

NewsPlugin can now be downloaded for free at newsplugin.com. An easy-to-follow instructional video is also available on the website.

DHCD Kicks Off the “DHCD Ward-by-Ward Check-In” Community Meeting Series

DHCD Kicks Off the “DHCD Ward-by-Ward Check-In” Community Meeting Series
WASHINGTON, DC – The D.C. Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) kicked off a threemonth
community meeting series, “DHCD Ward-by-Ward Check-In” at THEARC on Mississippi Avenue in Ward 8.
These meetings are designed to seek feedback and suggestions from community members to help shape the future
of affordable housing throughout the District. Additionally, the agency seeks to inform residents, business owners,
and other community members of the agency’s programs and services, current and future projects, and the Fiscal
Year (FY) 2016 affordable housing budget.
“These forums continue our commitment to ensuring that residents and community leaders have a seat at
table in shaping the future of Washington, DC,” said Mayor Bowser. “Ward by Ward, we will engage
residents, address their affordable housing needs and invest in the resources that will help build more
pathways to the middle class.”
These meetings will provide a platform for communities to voice their concerns, ask questions and provide input on
what the housing and community development needs are in their neighborhoods. Additionally, agency leaders will be
on hand at the meetings to discuss the Housing Production Trust Fund (HPTF) and other resources available to
developers and community members to ensure affordable housing.
Mayor Bowser recently discussed during her State of the District Address that the HPTF will be funded at $100
million during FY 2016 and beyond—delivering on an important campaign promise that has received unanimous
support from the DC Council. The fund is critical to the District’s plans to end chronic homelessness and support
affordable housing in the city.
“It is DHCD’s goal to continue to build strong relationships with our partnerships to better understand the housing and
resource needs of our communities,” said DHCD Director Polly Donaldson, who was confirmed by the DC Council
and officially appointed by Mayor Bowser last month. “At the end of the series we hope to have a clearer
understanding of the various housing and community development needs ward-by-ward and neighborhood-byneighborhood.
This information will help the agency effectively plan the best approaches for creating opportunities,
preserving valuable resources, and building enduring communities throughout the District.”
Agency leaders met first with Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners a few weeks ago to announce the community
meeting series and learn about top priorities for their respective neighborhoods. The series began in Ward 8 and will
conclude in late June in Ward 1. Below is a full listing of meetings.
