Review of Culture International Edition No. 81 Studies on Regional History and Literature

MACAU, October 27 - This issue of Review of Culture (International Edition) opens with a study of the construction of Zhang Baozai as a cultural icon and a well-known pirate in the maritime history of China, followed by a study about the controversial ‘Festa das Cabeças’ and the history of East Timor under the administration of Governor Afonso de Castro. The focus then shifts back to maritime trading networks, with a presentation of Shy Kinqua and his sons, a prominent trading family in the Canton trade era. The timeline moves forward to the Cold War period, where the author compares the migrants from Mainland China in Hong Kong and Macao. In the cultural heritage section, the concept of Cultural Heritage Community is reconsidered through the case of Macao’s patios. The penultimate section explores the complex interracial relationships between Chinese men and Portuguese women as portrayed in the works by Portuguese female writers. The issue concludes with a book review section analysing  Ivo Carneiro de Sousa’s Memórias, Viagens e Viajantes Franceses por Macau (1609–1900) and Maria Anna Acciaioli Tamagnini Barbosa’s Lin Tchi Fá — Flor de Lótus.
